Navigating the Magic of Nantucket in September

As the final days of summer begin to fade, so does peak tourist season in Nantucket — and September emerges as one of the most magical and special times to enjoy the island! With crowds disappearing and the island quieting, autumn is the perfect season to take in Nantucket without all the usual distractions. From fun Nantucket by Water cruises, to beautiful bike rides among the fall foliage, and just about everything in between, there’s plenty to do, see, and savor this time of year on Nantucket. Here are a few of our favorites:

Enjoy Beautiful Views on a Sunset Cruise

There’s nothing quite like a Nantucket sunset, but we think they’re even more spectacular in the fall. There’s something about the combination of cool, crisp air and cozy sweaters that makes taking in a sunset much more memorable — especially when you’re watching it from the water! Our sunset cruises run through Oct. 9th and are the perfect way to catch views of the beautiful hues in the sky, as well as the gorgeous fall foliage on the shoreline. Be sure to bring a camera, your favorite snacks, and some extra layers for an autumn night you won’t forget.

Take a Sconset Bluff Walk

Siasconset, or ’Sconset', is an iconic Nantucket neighborhood where you can enjoy one of the most popular nature walks on the island: Sconset Bluff Walk. Take an autumn stroll along this public path and see charming Nantucket homes to your left, and beautiful vistas of the Atlantic to your right. With the temperatures dropping and the leaves changing color, now’s the perfect time to get out there and enjoy the view.

Go on a Whaling History Tour

Love history and stunning views? Get the best of both worlds on our Whaling History Tour! Learn about what life was like during the Whaling Era, explore historic remaining landmarks, and gain insights into the island’s storied past.

Explore the Island by Bike

Biking is one of the best (and most fun) ways to explore Nantucket Island, and September is a great time to try it out. You can rent bikes by the hour, by the day, or even by the weekend from bicycle shops around the island. Then hop on one of 30 miles of bike paths and get ready to take in the beautiful autumn scenery. It’s the perfect fall activity to do with friends and family, all while getting some fresh air and enjoying some exercise.

Pencil in an Up Harbor Eco Trip

Explore some of the most remote areas of Nantucket, including Polpis Harbor and Wauwinet Harbor, on our Up Harbor Eco Trip — which is a super fun cruise to fit in before the weather turns for good! Savor the serenity of Nantucket in the fall, take in picturesque views of the harbors. It’s an autumn activity you’re sure to adore.

As the island transitions from the vibrant energy of summer to the serene beauty of fall, it offers the same magical charm so many people know and love. It’s clear that Nantucket is not just a summer sanctuary, but a year-round paradise that can and should be enjoyed season after season. With this go-to fall guide, we’re officially ready to take on the island this September… Who’s with us?!
