What to Expect on a Nantucket By Water Boat Tour

Updated: Jun 6, 2025

Planning your Nantucket vacation? Whether it’s your first time on the island or your tenth, there’s always something new to discover—especially when you see Nantucket from the water. If you're searching for things to do on Nantucket that are both relaxing and great for anyone, a tour with Nantucket By Water offers a unique experience you simply can’t get on land.

This guide is perfect for first-time visitors or anyone curious about what it’s really like to step aboard. From meeting the captains to choosing the perfect tour, we’ve got everything you need to know before you go.

Meet Your Captains and Crew

What makes a great boat tour? The people who run it. At Nantucket By Water, our crew is the heart of the experience. Locally rooted and deeply passionate about this island, our captains are all U.S. Coast Guard certified with years of experience navigating the waters around Nantucket. But beyond safety credentials, they bring something even more special: an easygoing, welcoming vibe and a deep love for sharing Nantucket’s beauty.

You might hear fun facts about the island’s history, get tips on the best local spots to explore, or simply enjoy the peaceful sounds of the harbor. Every trip is guided with care, humor, and attention to your comfort.

Pick Your Perfect Tour

There’s no one-size-fits-all here. Our variety of boat tours lets you choose the pace and purpose that suits your Nantucket itinerary:

Sunset Cruise – End your day on a high note with a slow cruise and golden skies.

Harbor/Ice Cream Cruise – A hit with families (and kids at heart). Sweet, scenic, and stress-free.

Sip and Fish – The perfect mix of lighthearted fishing for the kids and casual sipping for the adults.

Private Charters – Whether it’s a celebration, company outing, or romantic sail, tailor your time on the water exactly how you want it.

Each tour has its own personality. Click here to explore the full list.

What To Bring With You

A little planning goes a long way when you’re heading out on the water.  Here’s what we recommend bringing:

Sunglasses & sunscreen – Even on cloudy days, the glare off the water is no joke.

A light layer or sweatshirt – It can get cool out on the water, especially in the evening.

Camera or phone – You’ll want to capture these views.

Snacks or drinks – Our tours are BYOB-friendly. We always have a cooler with ice!

Boat-safe footwear – Think sneakers or deck shoes over sandals or heels.

And don’t forget—there are no restrooms onboard, so be sure to plan accordingly before your departure time.

The Onboard Experience

From the moment you step aboard, the vibe is laid-back and inviting. Whether you’re chatting with fellow passengers, enjoying the music, or simply taking in the salty breeze, the atmosphere is casual and comfortable. There’s no rigid structure—our tours are designed to help you slow down, settle in, and see Nantucket from a new perspective.

Our captains are happy to answer questions or give you space to just enjoy the scenery. You’ll cruise past Brant Point lighthouse, the wildlife sanctuary of Coatue, see some famous homes and boats, and, maybe even see a few seals along the jetties.. It’s a sensory experience that blends natural beauty, local insight, and peaceful moments you’ll want to bottle up and take home.

Tips to Make the Most of It

Here are a few pro tips to help make your time on the water even better:

  • Arrive early – Boarding is prompt, and we don’t want you to miss your trip!

  • Have accessibility needs? – Call ahead so we can assist.

  • Book popular tours in advance, especially the sunset cruises.

  • A cooler with ice is provided on our cruises—perfect for chilling your drinks.

Please note: Tickets are non-refundable unless canceled due to weather at the time of departure.

No-shows or late arrivals cannot be refunded—make sure to double-check your tour time and location.

This was such a helpful breakdown of what to expect on the water. I really appreciate the tip about bringing layers since the breeze can get chilly even on a sunny day. It makes me realize how much planning goes into a trip; sometimes I wish I could just pay someone to write my assignment for me so I’d have more time to focus on vacation research like this! Does the harbor tour usually get crowded during the late afternoon?

I recently started using this platform, and it’s been quite easy to get used to. The design is simple, and everything is clearly arranged. I didn’t face any technical issues while using it. It loads quickly and works smoothly on both mobile and desktop. I also like that it doesn’t add unnecessary complexity. It’s been a nice experience overall. I’ve been using it in my free time without any trouble. If you’re curious to explore it, you can check Play 99 Exchange and see if it suits you.
